North Korea has both rural and urban areas, which are extremely different ways of living, but they are able to work well together with their many ways of transportation. In the urban areas of the country, the main transportation system is the rail system, because it is cheap and efficient. If they don’t use the railways, they would likely walk on foot, because motor vehicles are not very common due to their poor economy for the past few years. In rural areas, they often use oxcarts, because they can easily transport goods. The oxcarts can take the goods to be sold in town or down to the water to be taken by boat for export. Another commonly used transportation is biking. Usually men bicycle because it is considered unpolite for women. Along with oxcarts and bicycles, people in rural areas also walk to places they need to go. These are a few ways that people travel within North Korea, but the boat also allows them to trade things out of the country. Most of the inland waterways (like the Korea Bay), are only safe for small boats, but on the east side, the Sea of Japan can let larger boats pass through. The sea borders all of the main trading partners, Russia, South Korea, North Korea and Japan. The tides are also small in the Sea of Japan because of its enclosure. Having all these ways to travel around North Korea helps everyone. In rural areas, they grow vegetables and trade people in urban areas, where they sell the goods at a market, and people in both areas are able to bring goods and get goods from other countries by boat. When you are trading things on a boat, the places that you can trade from are basically endless. In the water, everything connects to something else, so you can trade almost across the world. These are a few ways people in North Korea are able to move around their country and trade things with themselves and other countries as well.
